Four Lakes Green Party of Dane County
The Four Lakes Green Party is south central Wisconsin's Green Party chapter. We have elected more Greens to office than any other chapter in the United States! We work with the Campus Greens at UW-Madison and elsewhere. And we are always working with our elected officials to implement Green policy at the local level. New members are always welcome. Meetings
General Membership ~ We meet at 7pm on the third Wednesday of every month. Meetings are almost always at the Neighborhood House (29 S. Mills St.) at 7:00pm in Madison. Meetings are wheelchair accessible. If you require special assistance, or if you would like childcare to be provided, please call us at least one week in advance at 608 204 7336. See you there!
Coordinating Committee ~ The officers of the Four Lakes Green Party meet every second Monday of the month at the Social Justice Center, 1202 Williamson Street, on Madison's near east side. Members are welcome to participate in these meetings. The Coordinating Committee is not empowered to set Green Party policy or stake out new positions; instead, the purpose of these meetings is to insure clear communication among officers, committees, and taskforces, and to follow through on the implementation of general membership decisions.
Committees and Taskforces ~ Four Lakes Green Party working committees and policy taskforces meet on an ad hoc basis. Please contact us at 608 204 7336 to find out how you can get involved in this work.
History
Activists from the first Nader/LaDuke campaign formed the Four Lakes Green Party of Dane County in December of 1996. The Four Lakes Green Party was preceded by other local green formations, including the Yahara Greens, the UW Greens, and Agenda Green Dane, and is the third oldest Green Party in Wisconsin.
Key specifically Green accomplishments in Dane County have included the initiation and coordination of the international Tyson Boycott in support of and the striking members of UFCW 538; the adoption of Madison's minimum wage law; the initiation and coordination of the successful troop withdrawal initiative and referenda efforts in southern central Wisconsin; the initiation of the local, successful impeachment resolution campaigns; the successful shoreline preservation ordinance campaign; active leadership in the campaign to stop Exxon mining from operating in Wisconsin; ending the Madison Metropolitan School District's Coke contract; winning UW divestment from Burma; among others. Greens and Green elected officials have also been active on a host of other important issues.
Since 1996, the Four Lakes Green Party has elected many of our members to local office. Current local Green elected officials include four members of the Madison Common Council: Brenda Konkel, Satya Rhodes Conway, Marsha Rummel, and Robbie Webber - and four members of the Dane County Board of Supervisors: John Hendrick, Ashok Kumar, Kyle Richmond, and Barbara Vedder.
Past Green elected officials have included: Brian Benford, Todd Jarrell, Austin King, Al Matano, Tom Powell, Jose Sentmanat, Shwaw Vang, and Echnaton Vedder.
Other local Greens who have sought office include: Jeanne Behrend, Adam Benedetto, Steve Cowan, Nelson Eisman, Chris Kratochwill, Ben Manski, Lori Nitzel, Brian Pruka, Steve Ringwood, Jeff Schimpff, Tony Schultz, Sally Stix, Rae Vogeler, Lauren Woods, and Jim Young, among others (please contact us if we're missing someone).
Local Greens have consistently played key leadership roles in the national Green Party and in the international Green movement.
